Malviya Nagar (Delhi)

Malviya Nagar is an affluent region of South Delhi, and is close to Saket and Hauz Khas very close to IIT Delhi.It is named after the noted freedom fighter Madan Mohan Malviya.

Malviya Nagar was initially populated in the 1950s by refugees from Pakistan, after the Partition of India. A large portion of the population were ethnic Punjabis and Sindhis.

Today, Malviya Nagar is bounded by Panchsheel Enclave on the north, Sheikh Sarai on the east, Saket in the south, and Sarvapriya Vihar on the west. Enclaves that are part of Malviya Nagar include Geetanjali Enclave, Bhavishya Nidhi Enclave, Khirki Extension, Shivalik colony and Sarvodaya Enclave. It is serviced by the Malviya Nagar station of the Delhi Metro.Malviya Nagar is also home to the Delhi Police department's Police Training School.

Major sites

Malviya Nagar has two major commercial shopping areas and markets and a specialty hospital [1]. There are several neighborhood parks that are popular jogging and running areas. A number of Mughal era monuments are located in Malviya Nagar and are clustered close to the Corner Market. Bulls n Bears school is located at main gol chakkar ,which is famous for stock market education in the country.

Eating

The dining variety in this neighbourhood has expanded recently. On the Market Road, there are well-known and established eateries as well as fast food joints. Most restaurants offer both vegetarian and non-vegetarian food except during the Navratras.

Malviya Nagar has two markets: the Corner Market and the Main Market (closed on Tuesdays). These markets cover the day-to-day needs and even some extravagant needs of the local residents. The Main Market has several stores, including those selling vegetables, fruits, clothes, appliances, etc. Some upmarket brands like Adidas, Reebok, Bata, and Liberty have also set up shop here. Electronic showrooms for Samsung, LG, and Sony are also located here. There are several shop of clothes like Koutons, Colors, Raymond, Fashion Web, Colour Plus, Cantabil, Pummy Wear, Manohar Fancy Store. Finally, jewellery and eyewear stores have also carved a niche recently. Prominent stores include BIS Hallmarked approved jewellery stores like Ambica Jewellers, Bansalsons Jewellers, Maha Shakti Jewellers, Ganpati Jewellers etc. and optical stores like Dayalsons Opticals, Carl Ziess,etc. A new Kake Da hotel branch at panchsheel enclave have added a good chicken restaurant advantage to this area.

Saket District Centre is a walkable distance on Press Enclave Road across from Khirki Extension, which has a number of malls like Select City Walk, DLF, MGF Metropolitan, Square One and a couple of office complexes. There are also food courts and movie theatres like PVR & DT.

Transportation

Malviya Nagar is bordered by two major New Delhi throughfares - Sri Aurobindo Marg, which is a primary route connecting Connaught Place and Central Delhi to Gurgaon, and the Outer Ring Road.

Several bus lines also serve the area, with fares ranging from Rs. 5.00 to Rs. 15.00:

Routes 503 and 520 terminate at Malviya Nagar.

Autorickshaws and taxis are widely available; the autorickshaw stand is at the Main Market & the round about near Shivalik Gate(Bus Depot). Walking to bordering neighborhoods - particularly Saket - is also possible.

The Delhi Metro Yellow line to Gurgaon is functional and has a Malviya Nagar station [2][3].
